On the eve of battle, the Cardinal of Périgord made another attempt to mediate between the French and English armies. He rode to the French host, hoping that his words could persuade King John and his nobles to consider peace. However, the French responded coldly:
“Return whither you will—bring here no more words of treaty or peace. If you value your safety, depart immediately Ephesus Walking Tour.”
Seeing that his efforts were in vain, the cardinal realized that no agreement could be reached. He left the French camp and went to the Black Prince to report the outcome.
The Black Prince Prepares
The cardinal told the prince, “Sir, do what you can. There is no remedy but to await battle, for I could find no accord with the French king.”
The prince, undeterred, replied with calm determination:
“That is the same intent of all our people. God help the right!”
With this, the cardinal returned to Poitiers. His company included some knights and squires who favored the French more than the English. English Strategy Hidden from the French
Despite these challenges, the English army maintained strict organization and discipline. The French knew only part of the English plan. The Black Prince had secretly arranged a special force of three hundred men on horseback, accompanied by an equal number of mounted archers. Their mission was to maneuver under the cover of a nearby mountain and strike into the battle lines of the Duke of Normandy, who was positioned on foot beneath the mountain.
This strategy was entirely unknown to the French. The prince positioned his main battle among the vines and hedges, using the terrain to strengthen the weaker parts of his formation. His careful placement and secret plans gave the English a significant tactical advantage.
The Black Prince Anticipates Battle
When the Black Prince realized that the cardinal had returned without negotiating peace, and that the French king showed little concern for diplomacy, he addressed his men directly:
“We now see that battle is unavoidable. Let each of you do your duty and defend the right!”
The soldiers, confident in their leader and their preparation, accepted the order. They understood that discipline, strategic positioning, and courage would be essential in facing the larger French host.
